In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., there is no school on January 18.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became one of, if not the most, visible leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
Born: January 15, 1929, Atlanta, GA
Assassinated: April 4, 1968, Memphis, TN
Famous speech: I Have a Dream
Man of the Year by Time magazine: 1963
The Nobel Peace Prize: 1964
In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles.
King’s work wasn’t easy. He was arrested upwards of 20 times, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse and assault, and yet he emerged as a world leader and won the Nobel Peace Prize at the young age of 35.
